Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

Alright, let's get this party started!

Personally, I love it, LOVE IT, front to back. I must admit, I've been a little irritated with the podcast where Sam provides (extremely short) descriptions of the songs. For Adored, all he said was, "this is about a guy I sat next to at a bar. He told me a story and I couldn't remember much of it the next day". Wow, for reals? Now I'm actually kind of glad he didn't describe it too in depth because it was nice to listen to the lyrics and let them speak for themselves. Obviously it's about a couple who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. I also interpret it as a song about triumph over tragedy, having nothing but still having a good time. Rising from the ashes, that sort of thing. I can relate. This is the song I was looking forward to the most and it is probably my favorite off the entire album.

I could go on and on but I'll hand it off to the rest of you. What are your reactions so far? Favorites, standout tracks, things that make you go "hmmm".... discuss!

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

This is definatly one of the best albums of 2009. I'm not really good at writing reviews or anything but every song on here is just amazing! I think it must be impossible for The Bravery to put out anything bad because every song that they write is good, even b-sides and stuff. There are only 2 bands where I like every song they put out and that is Muse and The Bravery!

My favorite song is still Red Hands and White Knuckles, but I also really like She's So Bendable, it's great that Mike wrote and sang it.

btw what about the Stir the Blood remix of An Honest Mistake? where is that?

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

I also really love Sugar Pill. I'm always a stickler for the last song on any album. Not every band knows how to close their album appropriately but I think Sugar Pill is a nice, dreamy way to end Stir the Blood. It's also a good companion piece for She's So Bendable. In fact, I think Sam may have taken some inspiration from his very talented bass player when writing that song.

On a side note, does anyone else think it's weird that in my last post, I sorta made two references to C&C Music Factory? I'm losing my mind.

Amazing album! Definitely my favorite. A lot of tracks stand out to me, especially: Sugar Pill, Hatefuck, Red Hands and White Knuckles, and She's so Bendable. Dirt should definitely do more singing on the albums in the future.

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

Since I've received my CD yesterday, here are my thoughts ...

This is truly an amazing album. The arrangement of the songs played is such a perfect layout ... it couldn't have been any different. There are elements of old-school punk in here and the lyrics are so personal and moving. Especially love the screeching parts! Although, I have played again Song of Jacob, Slow Poison, I Am Your Skin, Red Hands and White Knuckles, Jack O'Lantern Man, Sugar Pill due to the mix and I tend to be partial to that style of music. The keyboard sounds in The Spector are like a romance ... IMO ;)

This has to be the most gut wrenching package ever put together and I can't stop listening to the CD. The anticipation was worth the wait.

Yes, I too love this album and I am very, very impressed.

this album is highly addicting and it is amaizng to see the same band that were selling out gigs in Arlenes Grocery (when I was too young to go in mind you) has come such a long way. Very wicked indeed!

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

This album is RIDICULOUS. For once I don't have the words for one of Audrey's Musical Analyses to describe how unreal it is.

But, I will say listening to it on the big speakers for the first time as opposed to streaming it on MySpace was like hearing it for the first time all over again. I could really HEAR it, like there are so many subtle little nuances I didn't even catch the first time. Like...I think I peed my pants a little because it was THAT DAMN GOOD.

Stir The Blood is just so damn intense.

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

I agree.. listening to it LOUD made a huge difference! I was dancing all over the house today like a damn fool ;)

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

This album is very strange. On the one hand it's full of energy but on the other I feel totally paralyzed when listening to it.
Every song is (literally) perfect (although I wouldn't say it's their best album as all their albums are equally great); "The Spectator" is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
Btw, does the player in Discog refuse to stream "Adored" in general or is it something with my computer? (I miss this song and my own "Stir the Blood which I haven't received yet :( )

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

I absolutely adore this excerpt from an NME album review:

"...Also, Sam Endicott is quite pathological in his imagery, and on this album casts himself as a masochist who wants to be punished for being a bad little boy (Note from me: HA! I knew it! C'mere Sammy...). The nicely unpleasant ‘Hatef*ck’ has him squealing, “If I put my fingers in your mouth would you bite them”, while on ‘I Am Your Skin’ he sings “I want to be your skin/I want to feel everything you feel/I want to be your covering”.

Sam Endicott is almost certainly a serial killer and we wouldn’t want to be his next-door neighbour, but this does mean The Bravery are still one of the weirdest bands around. They’re out of step, out of time, out of place, and have completely gone off on one in their own strange little world; as such, there’s much to admire about The Bravery. Just never go down to Endicott’s basement."

Re: Stirring the Blood: official album discussion

Well I've said this on Facebook but I'll say it again here- I'm completely addicted to Spectator, it's flippin brill. I also really really love Red Hands, White Knuckles (and have since the first time I heard it live) and today really enjoyed playing I AmYour Skin on repeat.
